Most foreign nationals first obtain visitor visas to enter New Zealand. In fact, this is the most issued visa type in New Zealand. If you are from a visa waiver country, you can travel to New Zealand as a tourist, visit family or friends, or enrol in a brief academic or professional programme for up to 3 months on NZeTA. If you are not from a visa waiver country, you must obtain your visitor visa outside New Zealand before visiting. The traveller must demonstrate that you are a genuine visitor without the possibility of becoming an overstayer, breaching visa conditions and/or becoming subject to deportation. You must financially sustain yourself and everyone included in your application during your stay. Depending on your circumstances, you may be allowed to renew your visitor visa for up to 12 months in total.

Challenges
There is a common misconception that NZ visitor visa application is a straightforward, easy process in which you can represent yourself. The most challenging part is demonstrating you are a bona fide visitor to New Zealand. If you apply from offshore, you will not be allowed to comment on any information prejudicial to approving your visa application. INZ can decline your visa application immediately.
Even if you are from a visa waiver country, with the previous record that you were refused entry to New Zealand or became an overstayer, you will not be permitted to come to New Zealand on an NZeTA. Instead, you will be instructed to apply for a visitor visa to explain your past history in addition to the usual visitor visa requirements.
